Jesus said, “The wind blows where it chooses, and you hear the sound of it, but you do not know where it comes from or where it goes. So it is with everyone who is born of the Spirit.” (John 3:8)
We tend to think of faith as a done deal.
You either have it or you don’t.
Have you accepted Jesus? Done.
Are you born again? Done.
Yet, our trust in God is often like the wind.
Sometimes it’s a constant, pleasant breeze.
Sometimes it’s as strong as a tornado.
Sometimes our trust in God just stops.
Nothing moves. Nothing happens.
We don’t notice it. It’s like it’s not even there.
It does not move us or anyone else.
Perhaps this is OK. It could even be the way faith in God is supposed to work. Jesus said God’s Spirit is like the wind. It comes and goes, starts and stops, and blows whenever, wherever, and on whomever, it chooses. Yet, Jesus promised his followers that God will indeed send the Holy Spirit to remind you of all that Jesus said, did, and promised you, and it will give you peace (John 14:26-27). The wind may not seem to be blowing today, but Jesus promises that it will.
Prayer: O Holy Spirit, breathe into my life and my faith so that I can remember what you have promised and be at peace. Amen.
